The Public Floor Project is an initiative of physical theatre company Born in a Taxi. It aims to facilitate the creation of larger ensemble works informed by the Taxi style . All Public Floor participants are independent artists who have had a long term association with Born in a Taxi and its members.
As an independent physical theatre ensemble Born in a Taxi has continued to practise, develop, create and perform their unique style of dance, physical and visual theatre for over 20 years. The company’s approach to movement improvisation is highly crafted and innovative, using a comprehensive and focused working methodology, allowing each performance its own flavour within a structure to create improvised works that appear tightly choreographed.
The Public Floor project participants include (at various times) Ian David, Andrew Gray, Michael Havir, Kate Hunter, and Tamara Saulwick.
The Public Floor’s recent season of The Waiting Room sold out at the Melbourne Fringe Festival in September 2010, won the Brisbane Powerhouse Performance Award, and will be seen at Powerhouse’s World Theatre Festival in February 2011.
